GROW YOUR OWN LAMP: Mycelium Lamp

GROW YOUR OWN LAMP!
Mycelium Lamp
This lamp was created as an experimentation at Milieux’s Mycelium Cultivation Workshop. The growth process uses agricultural byproducts and combines them with liquid mushroom mycelium. The mycelium then binds with these components and grows for several days in custom moulds. When the growth process is complete, the material is heated and dried, ending the growth cycle. At the end of its life, the mushroom material can be broken into smaller pieces, then added to compost.

In a crossover of sustainability and innovative design, mushrooms have been used to grow everything from architecture to furniture as a ecological alternative to synthetic materials. The lamp is not manufactured from petroleum-based plastics, but rather grown with natural mushroom mycelium and hemp substrates. The overall goal is to challenge our ideas of what interior products should be made from, how they’re made and ultimately where they will end up.
